Milwaukie Farmers Market
Easy parking, great selection, and mild to moderate crowds make this market one of the most pleasant and accessible in the area.
Packer Farms, a longtime fixture on the Hood River Fruit Loop, sells its pears and apples mix-and-match style for $1 a pound. Macintosh apples bridge the gap between sweet and tart perfectly, and if you like classic, sweet, medium-fleshed pears, go for the Star Crimson varietals. Packer Farms also has some of the latest-season berries at the market.
Canby Asparagus Farm offers the market’s most appealing prepared food. Despite the name, homemade, authentic Mexican is the specialty; corn tortillas are grilled to order and filled with grilled pork, market vegetables (including asparagus), and hand-roasted pepper salsas, chilis and mole. Sweet tamales are filled with local pumpkin, vanilla, anise, sweet masa and milk chocolate.
9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., through Oct. 28, Southeast Main and Harrison streets, Milwaukie, 503-407-0956, www.milwaukiefarmersmarket.com
